Placenta Encapsulation

The concept of eating the placenta for postpartum health has existed for generations. The expected effects include reduced bleeding, increased milk supply, decreased chance of postpartum depression, increased energy, hormone stabilization, and more. How? Theoretically, the nutrients and hormones in the placenta cause this when returned to the birthing parent’s body.
Following Traditional Chinese Medicine preparation, Doula Dè prepares your placenta with minimal disruption to tissues so you may receive all the benefits your placenta has to offer.
A ProDoula Certified Postpartum Placenta Specialist Dè is so much more than someone who merely turns your placenta into capsules.
She is your postpartum recovery expert; she understands that you have questions about your recovery, caring for your baby and adjusting to life as a growing family.
This is why she encapsulates your placenta in the safety and comfort of your own home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What process do you offer?

Doula De LLC offers placenta capsules, tincture, cord keepsake, and placenta prints.

Dè will prepare your placenta for consumption using the Traditional Chinese Medicine method. The process includes steaming the placenta before dehydration to kill germs or bacteria. Additionally, this method is designed to help balance the placenta after childbirth. Knowing that this is the method we use gives our clients peace of mind for safe consumption.

  • How and when do I contact you?

Please contact me by phone within 12 hours of the birth of your baby and your placenta. I would like to encapsulate your placenta for you as quickly as possible.

Please remember that placenta encapsulation is a 2-day process in which I will need access to a sink, counter space, stove, and an outlet in your home. Contacting me promptly will allow you and me to coordinate our schedules so that I can accommodate you at your earliest convenience.

  • What do you need from me (birthing family/client)?

As your Postpartum Placenta Specialist, you can feel confident that my equipment and supplies are sanitized and prepared for your encapsulation. I will bring everything I need with me when I come. All I need from you is the placenta, access to a stove, sink, and outlet to plug in the dehydrator overnight. Everything else is my responsibility.

  • What do I do with the placenta until you get there?

The placenta must be placed in a cooler on ice or in a refrigerator within 2-4 hours of the birth and until I begin the process. If we cannot begin the encapsulation process within 3 days of birth, you will place the placenta in the freezer then defrost it in the refrigerator before my arrival.

  • When do you start the process?

Ideally, we like to begin the process within 2 days of your birth so that your capsules will be ready for ingestion by day 3. If this is not possible or undesirable by you, freezing your placenta and then defrosting it before encapsulation is recommended. Your placenta can be frozen for up to 3 months.

  • Why do you do the process in my home?

As a ProDoula Certified Postpartum Placenta Specialist, your safety and peace of mind and my professionalism are my priorities. The guidelines that I am required to hold myself accountable to exceed the standards of my industry. It benefits you to have this process done in your home in the following ways:

You can be confident that your placenta is, in fact, yours as it is the only one in your home and you brought it there yourself.

No risk of your placenta being exposed to any unfamiliar bacteria that may interfere with healthy postpartum recovery.

As a Postpartum Placenta Specialist, I am trained and certified to educate and support you during the postpartum period and want you to reap the full benefits of my expertise.

  • Do we need to be home during the process?

This is entirely up to you and your comfort level. Whatever you decide is how we will move forward. As a professional, it is my desire to make the process as smooth and comfortable for you as possible.

  • How long does the process take?

The entire process will take approximately 24 hours. I will be with you for 3 hours each day for 2 consecutive days. I will need, access to a stove, sink, and outlet BOTH days.

  • What if the hospital doesn’t release my placenta to me?

This is very rare but your healthcare team may send your placenta to pathology if there are any abnormalities or fetal developmental concerns. If you develop an infection or fever during labor your placenta would not be considered useful during the postpartum healing process and should not be consumed. However, most of the time your hospital, doctor or midwife are just not aware that you want it to keep your placenta. Communicate ahead of time by talking to your provider and make sure your wishes are in your birth plan!

Pro-tip: Have your support system remind your team that you want to keep your placenta during labor and again once the placenta is born.

  • What if my baby poops and my placenta is stained with meconium?

Meconium does not contain the fecal bacteria that normal stool does and therefore is safe to encapsulate. Meconium is only dangerous for the baby to inhale (which is why your healthcare team may raise concern during your labor) but is otherwise harmless. If your placenta is heavily stained I will wash it thoroughly with apple cider vinegar before the encapsulation preparation. Remember I follow the Traditional Chinese Medicine method, removing all unwanted bacteria and germs.

  • Who can’t encapsulate their placenta?

You should not consume your placenta if you have a blood-borne virus such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV.

  • Can I make a placenta smoothie?

Yes, you will be able to open the capsules and add the placenta “powder” to whatever you want.

  • What happens to my umbilical cord?

Depending on cord length, I will make a cute design for a keepsake (usually baby’s initial or a heart). Frame it or add it to your baby book, whatever you decide is up to you. Just remember to keep it dry, the cord is only cleaned and dehydrated and may rehydrate if moisture is re-introduced.

  • What if I am induced, have a cesarean, epidural, IV pain medication, or other medications during labor can I still encapsulate?

Yes, the placenta acts as a filter removing toxins and sending them back to the mothers liver to be detoxified from the body. However, if you develop a fever or infection during labor I do not recommend encapsulation.

  • Can I encapsulate my placenta if I have a water birth?

Yes, but we recommend you deliver the placenta onto a clean surface (chucks pad/towel). While water-births are a beautiful way to welcome your little one earth side; the temperature and condition of the water makes it susceptible to unwanted bacteria. If you cannot make it out in time, no worries, most bacterium will be removed during the steaming process.

  • What if I am diagnosed with Group B Strep (GBS) or have an infection and need antibiotics in labor, will I still be able to encapsulate?

Group B Strep is a common bacterium that does not normally pose health risks to the mother but can be harmful to baby as they pass through the vaginal canal. All bacteria in the placenta are killed during the Traditional Chinese Medicine steaming process.

Rarely, Group B Strep can lead to uterine infection. If you developed a uterine infection or fever during your labour, your placenta would not be considered useful in healing, and is likely to be taken to the pathology lab for testing. Otherwise Group B Strep is not contra-indicated in placenta remedy preparation.

“There aren’t enough words to describe how GRATEFUL I am for De’Junique and her encapsulation services. I reached out to this woman 2 days before I gave birth and she made it happen for me! I was very hesitant to use a service where my placenta was taken to a lab/factory. She came to my home and was apart of my village in those first days postpartum. I could not afford a postpartum doula but am so glad that she was open and willing to share some of her expertise in lactation support while completing the encapsulation process. This was such a special piece of my momma journey 🤍”
